Perfect Day At Alafia River State Park

Lisa Wright

January weather is some of the best riding temperatures for the trail rider and this proved to be true for The Florida Fox Trotter Association’s Alafia River State Park Trail Ride. Over 20 members and their horses were ready to enjoy the beauty of The Alafia River. Every age was present from children, teenagers, ,adults and some very young seniors who deserve the credit for showing us all up with their love for the trail and their Fox Trotters.

Alafia River State Park has over 6000 acres, 20 miles of well maintained horse trails and are very well marked. The land was formerly used for phosphate mining, some areas along the trail have rolling hills covered with grass. Hills in Florida? That’s right, a quick gallop for the fast group is exactly what we did up a few of those hills. Three groups were formed, Fast, Medium, and Casual (one could never call a Fox Trotter slow). There are some interesting experiences for your horse along the way to include, horses pulling carts, bike trail crossings meeting horse trails but all were very respectful of our horses and their possible reactions. The trails are beautiful and give you the feeling of “Old Florida” undisturbed. After our 2 hour ride we all met back enjoyed our packed lunches, exchanged stories of our Fox Trotters and caught up with friends some we hadn’t seen in a while and had the pleasure of meeting new friends.

As I drove home I reflected on the trail ride and I felt so exhilarated and my horse seemed to be quite pleased with the days adventure. Being in the show ring with my horses is enjoyable, though there is nothing quite like being on the trail, enjoying the beauty of the land and sharing it all with a fabulous partner, your horse. There is no better view than the view from the back of your horse.

I look forward to seeing you on the trail.
